Understanding and identifying violence

Violence can take many forms, often subtle ones. It is essential to identify these behaviors in order to better protect ourselves from them.

Forms of
violence

  • Common symptoms: hitting, biting, shaking, pushing, intentionally injuring.
  • Possible consequences: serious injuries, psychological problems, developmental delays.
  • Common symptoms: verbal abuse, threats, isolation, humiliation, cyberbullying.
  • Possible consequences: insecurity, low self-esteem, academic or behavioral difficulties.
  • Common symptoms: shouting, insults, sarcasm, blackmail, or profanity.
  • Possible consequences: sadness, shame, anxiety, and relationship difficulties.
  • Common symptoms: inappropriate touching, non-consensual physical contact, manipulation.
  • Possible consequences: depression, sleep disorders, inappropriate behavior.
  • Common symptoms: neglect of basic needs (emotional, physical, or relational).
  • Possible consequences: emotional scars, social rejection, developmental delays.
  • Common symptoms: control, manipulation, and threats within the relationship..
